Now that my little girl is in her big bed,
I decided to put the old crib mattress pad to work.
The key word here is old.
This crib pad has felt the cuddly weight of several cute baby bottoms over a numberof years, and the stretchy sides were completely worn out.
If your crib mattress pad is newer, you may rather wish to simply pass it on
to someone who could use it for a crib.
However, I thought this old thing would be perfect for protecting her
big bed mattress from any nightly accidents.
I took a run around the edge with sewing shears.
Now the pad will lay smoothly on the mattress, and is even reversible.
I placed the warm and fuzzy side up in the winter for extra coziness,
and the cool side up in the summer.
I wanted to see how well it worked before posting this,
and so far - since February, no matter what side has been used,
it has not slipped around underneath the bed sheet.
It may help that it is layered on top of the allergen-preventing mattress cover,
which has some texture.
The fitted bed sheet goes on over top and smooths out nicely.
For her twin size big girl bed, this works perfectly!
It's easy to launder with the sheets,
and a snap to pull off in case of a nighttime accident.
Please feel free to Pin It and put the idea to use!

We do this too, but on our bed http://a-bug-in-a-rug.blogspot.com.au/2012/02/master-bed-set-up-for-cosleeping.html
ReplyDeleteOur waterproof covers didn't have the fitted sides like yours though, they are just flat (and one has elastic on the edge)
Great idea!
Great minds think alike! I think that the simplest ideas and fixes sometimes make me feel the most productive. Your set up is a great idea too!
DeleteGreat idea! We just moved our son to a big boy bed, and I just bought waterproof mattress pads for him (we still have a 6 month old who can use the crib pads!). I double-sheet the crib and bed, mattress pad, sheet, mattress pad, sheet, sometimes even a third layer, so if there is a middle of the night accident, I just strip off the sheet and top pad and there is a fresh sheet underneath already! I hate wrangling crib mattresses in the middle of the night:)

Jessica - what a great idea - I never thought to add layers!
DeleteGreat frugal way to redo and reuse! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThanks! It does feel good to reuse something that otherwise might just get tossed. :-)
DeleteGreat way to repurpose that mattress pad. My daughter with special needs sometimes has accidents so we now have double protection on her bed, just in case...
ReplyDeleteExtra protection does ease the mind for sure! When the child is little it is more for the parent, but as the child gets older, I think the extra protection is really helpful in keeping an accident just that: an accident. In making bedding changes at simple, the frustration or impatience of yet another change is reduced and helps to keep the child's shame, guilt and embarrassment at bay. Blessings to you!
